5 tips to make the most of your day trip from Madrid

Day trips from Madrid are an absolute must for any visitor to the capital. With destinations like Toledo, Segovia and Ávila less than two hours away, you have UNESCO World Heritage cities within reach without needing to change accommodation. But to get the most out of them, a little planning goes a long way.

Tip 1 — Leave early. Try to set off from Madrid before 9am. The most popular monuments have far shorter queues in the early hours and you can enjoy the squares and streets almost to yourself before the larger groups arrive. Photos also come out much better in the morning light.

Tip 2 — Book in advance. Tickets to monuments like Segovia's Alcázar or Toledo's Cathedral can sell out, especially in high season (spring and summer). Book at least 48-72 hours ahead to avoid any nasty surprises. Guided tours also fill up quickly.

Tip 3 — Wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Castile's historic cities have cobbled streets, hills and plenty of uneven ground. Leave the heels or new shoes at home. Also, temperatures in these cities can be several degrees cooler than Madrid, especially in Ávila, so bring a jacket even if it feels warm in the capital.

Tip 4 — Try the local food. A day trip isn't complete without lunch at the destination. In Toledo, marzipan and Toledo-style stewed partridge are essential. In Segovia, the roast suckling pig is legendary. In Ávila, the IGP Ávila beef steak is one of the finest cuts in Spain. Book a table at a restaurant in the old town to round off the experience.

Tip 5 — Choose a local guide. The difference between seeing a city and truly understanding it comes down to the guide. A good local guide shares anecdotes, history and curiosities you won't find in any travel book. At Trip Tours we have certified guides who know every corner of these destinations and make every excursion a one-of-a-kind experience.
