Complete guide to visiting Toledo from Madrid in one day

10 March 2025Trip Tours4 min read

Toledo, less than an hour from Madrid by train or bus, is known as the City of Three Cultures due to the historical coexistence of Christian, Muslim and Jewish communities. Its medieval alleyways, cathedrals and synagogues make it one of the most fascinating destinations in Spain and an absolute must for any visit to the capital.

Among the monuments not to be missed are Toledo's Primate Cathedral, one of the most impressive examples of Spanish Gothic; the Mosque of Cristo de la Luz, dating from the 10th century; the Jewish Quarter with the Santa María la Blanca Synagogue; and the Church of Santo Tomé, home to El Greco's 'The Burial of the Count of Orgaz'. The Alcázar, perched at the top of the city, offers panoramic views that make the trip worthwhile on their own.

To get there from Madrid you have several options: the RENFE high-speed train from Atocha takes just 30 minutes and costs around €15; the bus from Méndez Álvaro station takes approximately one hour and is more affordable; or you can opt for an organised guided tour, which includes transport and lets you make the most of every minute without worrying about logistics.

The best time to visit Toledo is spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when temperatures are pleasant and tourist numbers are lower. In summer the heat can be very intense on the cobbled streets of the old town. If you can choose, avoid public holidays and the month of August to enjoy the city in greater peace.

Our top tip: book a tour with a local guide. Toledo has centuries of intertwined history around every corner, and an expert guide makes all the difference between simply seeing the city and truly understanding it. Our tours depart every day from the centre of Madrid and combine the most important sights with free time to explore at your own pace.
